American companies in Ireland 2026: number of US companies, jobs, and the US employers that obtain the most employment permits

American Companies in Ireland (2026): Which US Employers Hire Non-EU Workers

Last updated: 1 November 2026 | Data: American Chamber of Commerce Ireland (AmCham) facts and 2026 US-Ireland Business Report, IDA Ireland, and DETE’s lists of employers issued with employment permits (full year 2025 and January to September 2026).

American companies are the backbone of Ireland’s private-sector jobs market. According to AmCham Ireland, 1,002 US-owned companies have operations in Ireland and directly employ 245,000 people, up more than 16% since 2024, with another 175,000 jobs supported indirectly. That is 8.75% of all employment in the country.

But a famous name does not tell you whether a company will hire someone from outside the EU. This guide uses Ireland’s official employment permit data to show which US companies actually bring in non-EU workers, where the big US employers are based, and how to apply.

Quick answer

About 1,000 US companies operate in Ireland, employing around 245,000 people directly (AmCham). The US employers that obtained the most Irish employment permits for non-EU workers in January to September 2026 were Google Ireland (254), Amazon’s Irish companies (354 across four entities), Qualcomm’s Irish company QT Technologies (125), Analog Devices (86), Mastercard (77), Eli Lilly Kinsale (76) and Intel Ireland (71). Most hiring is in technology, pharma and medical devices, and finance, centred on Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway.

Counts differ depending on who is counting and what they include. In AmCham’s 2026 report, IDA Ireland’s chief executive puts it at “over 900 US companies” employing “more than 190,000 people”, and other contributors give figures between about 165,000 and 245,000. The 245,000 figure is AmCham’s headline, sourced to DETE’s 2025 Annual Employment Survey.

What this data does not show. DETE’s list records permits already issued. It does not show job titles, salaries or whether a company is hiring now, and a company being on it does not mean it will sponsor any particular role.

How to Get Hired by a US Company in Ireland

  1. Check your route. Non-EU workers need an employment permit. Roles on the Critical Skills list with a salary of at least €40,904 qualify for the Critical Skills Employment Permit, which most large US employers use for specialist hires.
  2. Apply through the company’s Irish careers page, filtering by Ireland or by city. Large US companies recruit directly, not through agents who charge candidates.
  3. Use an Irish-style CV. See our Irish CV format guide.
  4. Look at the permit data. A company that obtains dozens of permits a year is used to the process. Our employment permit company list shows who those employers are.
  5. Allow for processing. See current Irish work permit processing times.

Can Americans Work for US Companies in Ireland?

Yes, but being American does not remove the permit requirement. A US citizen working for Google in Dublin needs an employment permit like any other non-EU national, unless they have Irish or EU citizenship. Recent US graduates can also use the 12-month Working Holiday Authorisation, and Americans with an Irish-born grandparent may qualify for Irish citizenship by descent. Our guide to jobs in Ireland for Americans covers every route.
